Most were flying over<br \/>\nand continuing south but a few spent some time on the beach. The largest<br \/>\nflock was about 50 birds, the smallest 4. This is one of my best counts<br \/>\nof Franklin&#8217;s Gulls at Montrose ever, a consequence no doubt of the<br \/>\nrecent strong westerly winds. In addition to the Franklin&#8217;s we had a<br \/>\nnumber of other birds of interest, including:<\/p>\n<p>American Bittern &#8211; 1 in the dunes<br \/>\nBonaparte&#8217;s Gull &#8211; 6, all first cycle birds<br \/>\nShort-eared Owl &#8211; 2 flying around the dunes and over the lake<br \/>\nGreater Yellowlegs &#8211; 1 on the beach<br \/>\nWilson&#8217;s Snipe &#8211; 1<br \/>\nAmerican Woodcock &#8211; 1<br \/>\nLapland Longspur &#8211; 1<br \/>\nSnow Bunting &#8211; 2<br \/>\nAmerican Pipit &#8211; 1<\/p>\n<p>West winds in late October do a birder good.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Karen and I spent a couple hours at Montrose on October 26.
