There were good numbers of birds and I ended up with 70 species<br \/>\non the head. Sparrows were the big story, especially White-crowned,<br \/>\nwhich probably peaked today. Flycatchers, thrushes, and vireos on the<br \/>\nother hand were scarce and warbler diversity was low. Passerines were<br \/>\ncoming in off the lake for about an hour after sunrise. I had several<br \/>\nFOYs. Here are my highlights:<\/p>\n<p>Common Loon &#8211; 1 adult in breeding plumage in the lake<br \/>\nGreat Egret &#8211; 3 flyovers<br \/>\nNorthern Harrier &#8211; 1 going north low over the lake<br \/>\nBlack-bellied Plover &#8211; 1 cracking adult male in breeding duds on the beach<br \/>\nAmerican Avocet &#8211; 4 on the beach<br \/>\nWhite-rumped Sandpiper &#8211; 1 flying around the beach with a group of Least<br \/>\nSandpipers<br \/>\nLesser Yellowlegs &#8211; 13, a nice count for Montrose which tends to be<br \/>\nTringa repellent<br \/>\nDowitcher sp. &#8211; 1 with the yellowlegs<br \/>\nGreat Crested Flycatcher &#8211; 1 This and an Eastern Kingbird were my only 2<br \/>\nflycatchers<br \/>\nBlue Jay &#8211; ~100 flying over and around the Point<br \/>\nCliff Swallow &#8211; 1<br \/>\nBank Swallow &#8211; ~25, moving north and south<br \/>\nMarsh Wren &#8211; 1 in the Dunes<br \/>\nHermit Thrush &#8211; 1 This and a Veery were my only Catharus thrushes<br \/>\nAmerican Pipit &#8211; ~5, all at the beach<br \/>\nNorthern Parula &#8211; 1<br \/>\nClay-colored Sparrow &#8211; 1<br \/>\nWhite-crowned Sparrow &#8211; Hundreds<br \/>\nWhite-throated Sparrow &#8211; ~75<br \/>\nSavannah Sparrow &#8211; ~30<br \/>\nRose-breasted Grosbeak &#8211; 3<br \/>\nOrchard Oriole &#8211; 1 adult male<\/p>\n<p>I also had a dead Sora on the fishing pier.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I spent a couple hours at Montrose this morning, May 7, from just before sunrise to about 8 when the cold front passed and the rain and lightning started.
