On the White-rumped Sandpiper note the:
- White rump (not always visible)
- Slightly drooped tip of the bill
- Pale base to the lower mandible
- Streaked flanks
On the Baird's Sandpiper note the:
- Lack of rufous in the upperparts
- Straight all black bill
- Unstreaked flanks
